Our Story
It was the year 1927 and just like destiny took John Hunter to Kenya, destiny brought 17 year
old Rusi E Palia to Wayanad. Studying in a college in Bombay, he was losing his eyesight. On
the advice of a doctor to send him to a place that is full of greenery, he arrived in
Sultan’s Battery (Sultan Bathery, today); where his father had a lease over 24000 acres of
private forest, of which Pambra forest was 12000 acres in extent. When he landed at Sultan’s
Battery, Wayanad, he found a thatched roofed stall serving tea to the passengers who were
travelling to Calicut from Mysore. It would shut down the moment the bus started on its
onward journey. A caretaker, who knew only Malayalam escorted him on a 18 km journey through
virgin forest, to his wooden cabin deep inside Pambra forest. For the strapping youngster
from Bombay, it was love at first sight. He recovered his eyesight completely, but he would
not move from Pambra.
